Ride the roof of the world and get as close as you can get to Mt. Everest on a motorcycle! We take you just four miles from Base Camp (5200m) North. On average you will be riding at 4500m everyday. There will be 3 days to safely acclimatize in Lhasa before riding out to higher plains and encountering beautiful ice blue lakes and seemingly endless desert.
*Please note there is a government enforced age restriction for riding a motorcycle in Tibet for people 70 years and older.
10 Day Itinerary
Welcome to Tibet, the roof of the world! Your journey begins at Lhasa where you will be met by a member of the Ride Nepal Team at the airport and driven to the hotel. You will have the rest of the day to acclimate. Overnight hotel accommodations at the famous Yak Hotel 3*
Today we will assist you with the necessary paperwork to obtain your local motorcycle license (this can only be done upon arrival). The rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight at the Yak Hotel
Start today’s Lhasa exploration with an exciting visit to the iconic Potala Palace, regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. In addition, you will also visit Jokhang Temple which is considered to be the temple where the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism lies. The last site of the day will be the famous Sera Monastery where you will have the opportunity to observe monks debating in a courtyard as they have done for hundreds of years.
226 miles / 365 KM. A thrilling motorcycle ride is about to begin! We will leave the hotel after breakfast and ride to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet and the world’s third highest city. Along the way we will admire the sacred Yamdrok Lake located at an altitude of 4400m, covering over 360 square kilometers. And to top it off we also pass by Karola glacier (5045m) . Overnight at 4* hotel in Shigatse.
149 miles / 240 KM – Our day begins with a visit to the official seat of the Panchen Lama: Tashilhunpo Monastery, it is the largest and most influential Gelug monastery in the Shigatse Prefecture. Later in the day we head to Tingri. Overnight hotel accommodation in Tingri at the Roof of the World Hotel 2*
108 miles / 175 KM – We start our early morning ascent passing through old Tibetan villages. We continue to the Gyawu-La pass (5198 m) from where you can see a large stretch of the Himalayas, including Mt. Makalu (8463m), Mt. Lyou chotse (8561 m), Mt. Everest (8844 m) and Mt. Cho Oyu (8201 m) towering over the barren landscape. From the pass we ride down 48 switchbacks and continue to Rongbuk Monastery (5000m), the highest monastery in the world, just 7km from Everest Base Camp. From here Mt. Everest is in full view, standing at 8848m. After spending some time gazing at the tallest mountain on earth we ride back to lower ground and stay over in Old Tingri at the Snow Leopard Hotel
186 miles / 300 KM – Leaving Old Tingri which used to be an important trading post where Sherpas from Nepal came and exchanged rice, grain and iron for Tibetan wool, livestock and salt. We retrace our previous route to Shigatse. Stunning views of the vast and pristine plateau will accompany us throughout the day. Overnight at Hotel Manasarovar 4*
205 miles / 330 KM – This morning we ride besides the Brahmaputra River, one of the longest rivers in the world, on our way to visit the famous Yangpachen Hot Springs before arriving in Damxung. Overnight at a Hotel in Damxung.
174 miles / 280 KM – We start the day by crossing the Nagen-La pass (5190m) to reach Namtso Lake, one of three sacred lakes in Tibet. It is also the highest lake in the world standing at 4718m above sea level. Returning to Lhasa for a celebratory meal. Overnight at the Yak Hotel
This morning say farewell to Tibet, your guides and support crew as this amazing journey comes to a close. We will drive you to the airport in time for your onward flight.
