Tour overview

Ride the roof of the world on BMW GS. On this tour we journey to the world’s most sacred mountain, Mt. Kailash (6638m), as well as the tallest Mt. Everest (8848m). Starting the trip in Lhasa, we ride as far west to the ancient kingdom of Guge, the foremost Buddhist Kingdom up til the 1600s. Included in this tour are two full days sightseeing the capital and a guided tour of Potala Palace, the childhood home of the current Dalai Lama.

14 Day Itinerary

Welcome to Tibet,  the roof of the world! Your journey begins at Lhasa where you will be met at Lhasa Airport by a member of the team and driven to the hotel. You will have the rest of the day to relax and acclimatize. Overnight hotel accommodations at the famous Yak Hotel 3*

Today we will assist you with the necessary paperwork to obtain your local motorcycle license. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight at the Yak Hotel

Start today’s Lhasa exploration with an exciting visit to iconic Potala Palace. In addition, you will also visit Jokhang Temple which is considered the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism. Then to the famous Sera Monastery, where you will have the opportunity to observe monks debating in the courtyard as they have done for hundreds of years.

226 miles / 365 KM. A thrilling motorcycle ride is about to begin! We  ride to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet and the world’s third highest city. Along the way we pass Yamdrok Lake (4400m) covering over 360 square kilometers. Also passing Karola glacier (5045m) Overnight at 4* hotel in Shigatse.

280 miles / 450 KM. A challeging ride today as we cross 9 high passes in one day. We venture into Western Tibet, home to over 1000 wild donkeys, wild horses, vultures, eagles, yaks, mountain antelope and changra (pashmina goats). We arrive tonight at the remote, but busy town of Saga.

304 miles / 490 KM. Today we ride to the ultimate spiritual destination of Mt Kailash.  There are two great lakes that are fed from the ice melt of Kailash. We cross two high passes on the way as we traverse the high altitude desert. Keep your eyes open for wild donkeys! The second high pass is called Mayum La pass (5216m) this is the gateway to Kailash.  Overnight at Himalaya Hotel

143 miles / 230 KM. Today we will start our ride through pristine grasslands and clay forests. We may spot the rare black-necked crane, or even a wolf.  Overnight hotel accommodation.

205 miles / 330 KM. Early in the morning we ride to Tsaparang, the oldest centre of Guge where the former Summer Palace towers over the landscape. A fortress wall and four temples guard the entrance. This kingdom is one of the oldest in Tibet and one of the most important, there are ruins of the fortress built into the stone of a looming ridgeline. Frescoes have survived inside the ancient Thöling Monastery and inside the caves in their thousands. Very few western tourists make it here as it is so remote. 335 miles / 540 KM. This morning we will have the opportunity to witness the sunrise over Lake Manasarovar, where Mt. Kailash stands directly ahead of us.  Riding back to Saga, we retrace our original route. Overnight hotel accommodation in Saga.

199 miles / 400 KM

Today we will cross the Brahmaputra River, one of the longest rivers in the world. Midway through today’s ride we will stop to appreciate a phenomenal panorama of Pelku Tso Lake with Mt. Shishapama (8012m) in the background, the 14th highest mountain in the world. We continue to Gyawu-La pass (5198 m) from where you can see Mt. Makalu (8463m), Mt. Lyou chotse (8561 m), Mt. Everest (8844 m) and Mt. Cho Oyu (8201 m). On the way down from the pass we ride 48 switchbacks. Nearing the end of the EBC highway we arrive at Rongbuk Monastery (5000m), the highest monastery in the world.  Here you’ll get unobstructed views of Mt. Everest. We then head back to New Tingri for the night.

We first ride Lhatse where we rejoin the main highway and ride back to Shigatse.

Hotel Manasarovar 4*

205 miles / 330 KM. The day begins at the largest and most influential Gelug monastery in the Shigatse region. The rest of the day will be spent traversing the plateau on our way to visit the famous Yangpachen Hot Springs before arriving in Damxung. Overnight at a Hotel in Damxung.

174 miles / 280 KM. We start the day by crossing the Nagen-La pass (5190m) and reach Namtso Lake. The lake is one of three sacred kinds in Tibet. It is also the highest lake in the world standing at 4718m above sea level. We then return to Lhasa. A celebratory meal in the evening will mark the end of this epic motorcycle expedition.

Say farewell to Tibet, your guides and support crew as this amazing journey comes to a close. Your transfer to Lhasa airport will be arranged in time for your onward flight to mainland China.
